”MEMO” OF THE DAY:
Hot of the printer from “Mr. Sullivan’s Desk.” Gotta love it.

STARTING THE ENGINE:
Harold Ickes has signed onto Carl McCall’s NY Gubernatorial campaign. (McCall, the first black Democratic candidate for Governor in New York.)

The McCall campaign is asking him to do something that they haven’t yet managed to do on their own: reverse the direction of an electoral battle that is rapidly getting away from them. "He understands better than anybody how this game works," said top McCall adviser Bill Lynch. "He did it for Bill Clinton in New York, and he did it for Hillary last time out. As a fund-raiser and as a general tactician, he’s going to be very helpful."

Joining Harold are the Bills (Lynch and Clinton), as well as current and former Clinton staffers like senior advisor Eric Eve (Gore’s campaign manager), fund-raiser Vivian Santora, adviser Sarah Kovner and operative Paul Elliott. Even if they don’t win, this team will help McCall take a big bite outta Pataki.

Turns out the NY Gubernatorial race will be one to watch in the next three weeks. And, the Dems could certainly use a win. The coming together of this team around McCall also makes me wonder were the engine will head next. After all, in the reality that is politics, 2008 is not that far away…

Anyway, it’s good to see Harold back doing what he does better than anyone. It was my pleasure to serve under him in 1995, putting together the Committee to Re-elect Clinton/Gore in ’96, and also the early details of the DNC Convention. He’s a brilliant strategist. When politicians listen to him, they do damn well.

There are many folks in politics that earned my appreciation during my time at the White House. Harold earned my respect – not something I give easily or often.
